5 Stages of a Severe Termite Infestation
A severe termite infestation doesn’t happen overnight—but when it does, the damage can be devastating. Understanding the stages of infestation helps Malaysian homeowners and property managers identify the problem early and choose the right treatment method.
1. Silent Entry: Termites Begin Without Warning
Termites enter buildings quietly—usually through underground tunnels or tiny foundation cracks.
In this stage, there are no visible signs. They often start attacking hidden timber such as flooring, skirting, or built-in cupboards.
This stage can last for months or even years, especially if no termite inspection is done.
2. Colony Establishment and Expansion
Once inside, the termite colony begins to grow.
Worker termites start building tunnels and foraging for cellulose-rich materials, while the queen lays thousands of eggs.
At this point, they spread beyond a single location—into walls, ceilings, and furniture.
This is where early warning signs (like mud tubes, hollow-sounding wood, or termite droppings) may appear.
3. Visible Surface Damage
As the infestation grows, visible symptoms become obvious.
You might see:
- Bubbling paint or laminate
- Warped wooden panels
- Sagging floors
Doors that won’t close properly
This stage often signals moderate to heavy damage that requires corrective treatment.
4. Severe Structural Weakening
By now, termites may have eaten deep into wooden structures.
This can lead to:
- Collapsing cabinets or bookshelves
- Severely hollowed-out door frames
Damage to ceiling joists and support beams
At this stage, repair costs escalate, and safety becomes a concern—especially in older homes or buildings with wooden flooring.
5. Secondary Infestation and Long-Term Spread
If left untreated, the termites spread to adjacent rooms, furniture, and even neighbouring units.
Some colonies may establish satellite nests, especially in damp areas.
This stage may also include alate swarms (winged termites) emerging to form new colonies—an advanced warning that the infestation is fully mature.

Don't Wait Until It’s Too Late
Termites can cause tens of thousands in damage before they're detected.
If you suspect termites, act quickly with a professional termite inspection in Malaysia.
