6 Early Warning Signs of Termites in Built-In Cupboards
Termites often infest built-in cupboards without any obvious signs—until the damage becomes costly. By learning to spot early warning indicators, you can catch a termite problem before it spreads. If you're living in Johor Bahru or other high-risk areas in Malaysia, here's what to look out for.
1. Soft or Hollow-Sounding Wood
Tap on the surface of your cupboard with your knuckles.
If it sounds hollow or papery, termites may have eaten the internal layers.
This is a classic sign of subterranean termite activity, especially in older built-in cabinets.
Hollow-sounding wood is often the first clue homeowners notice before visible damage appears.
2. Bubbling or Warped Laminate
Termites produce moisture as they chew through wood, which can cause laminate coverings to warp, bubble, or peel off.
If the cupboard doors or surfaces suddenly look uneven or swollen, it may not be a water leak—it could be a termite infestation behind the panels.
3. Fine Wood Dust or Droppings
Keep an eye out for fine, sawdust-like particles collecting beneath or inside your cupboards.
These could be termite droppings (frass) or bits of chewed wood from internal tunneling.
Unlike general dirt, this dust tends to reappear even after cleaning, especially near corners and base panels.
4. Mud Tubes or Soil Trails
Subterranean termites build mud tubes (shelter tubes) to travel from the ground to your cupboards without exposure to air.
You might see these brown, pencil-width tubes along wall joints, skirting boards, or inside cupboard corners.
Breaking them will often reveal active termites inside.
5. Unusual Clicking Sounds at Night
If you’re in a quiet room and hear faint clicking or rustling sounds from inside your cupboards, it could be termites.
Soldier termites bang their heads against tunnel walls when disturbed, and workers make noise while eating wood.
These sounds are often most noticeable late at night when the home is silent.
6. Unexpected Difficulty Opening Doors
If your cupboard doors start sticking or feel swollen, especially during dry weather, it's not just humidity.
Termites can cause structural swelling by damaging the internal wood, making doors misaligned or hard to open.

Suspect Termites? Don’t Wait for Costly Repairs
Built-in cupboards are expensive to replace—and the longer you wait, the worse the damage gets. If you notice one or more of these signs, it’s time to schedule a termite inspection in Johor Bahru.
